Is it right or wrong for you to flip a switch that will cause an out of control train to change tracks and kill one person if it means saving five people?

push a fat man off a bridge in front of a speeding train to stop it from killing five people ?

kill a person for money ?

try and convince others to change their lifestyles and even pass laws forcing them to change their lifestyles because of your belief in global warming when you don't have a small carbon footprint yourself ?

force people to share risk and cost while hoarding surplus and control ?

right I don't see a way out of killing people altogher, so I leave it to the numbers.

right the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few...or the one

wrong You are playing God if you decide to pull the switch. You kill someone only if you pull the switch.

right y.

right well, you're saving more people than you're killing.

right assuming it's innevitable lives will be taken, then taking the least (no matter who those lives are) is the best available solution.

right 1 death is better than 5, aslong as the 5 are sure to survive.

right 1 < 5

wrong who are you to decide who should live and who should die. Maybe the 5 that were going to die were all convicted murderers and the single one was a child or single parent

wrong figure out a way to move the people or stop the train, there is always another way "the needs of the one do not always outway the needs of the many"

wrong simply impossible, read how trains work, before asking such a question

wrong not my matter

wrong leave the switch alone to not be responsible for the death of any people at all.

right RATIONALITY PEOPLE!!

wrong You can't think that way. What if the one is a priest, the five are death row inmates?

right If you don't do it you're actively killing 5 people, instead of just one.

right the fucker should be smart enough to get out of the way.

right 5 > 1. Unless that 1 guy is like, Jesus. Then this is wrong.

right we loose one person but it means saving five.

wrong I'm not a god.

right such a desision does more good than harm.

right yes cause once again your saving more lives

right based on existing information one death is better than 5 deaths, with further information this may change.

right all death is bad, but one death is less bad than five. There may be other mitigating factors, though. If the one person had (for example) information or abilities that would save thousands, it would be better to sacrifice the five.

right 5 are better than 1

wrong all lives are not valued equally; I lack the information needed to make a valuation; someone with better understanding of this situation might have already switched the tracks to save that one special person and my ignorant act would interfere

wrong All life is NOT equal. I would pull the switch if it meant killing an authoritarian to save a libertarian, but not the other way around. It is hard to know those things in advance, though, so I'd just leave it alone.

right the driver is Bush I and the person who got killed is Bush II.

right it's a 'no-brainer'

right life is invaluable

right I like flipping switches

right in this case you are not pushing someone in front of a train, but choosing a lesser number of deaths impartially.
